DescriptionThe volume contains selected works from young Europeans on the theme Man and Space. The decision to build Spacelab gave ESA the ideal chance to let some of Europe’s youngsters experience the joys, anxieties, frustrations, and thrills of designing and flying experiments in space. But only a few can share this unique opportunity, and many youngsters who are not budding scientists are also interested in Space. From thoughts such as these was born in the minds of the 'Young Europeans/Spacelab' (YES) group the idea for an art project 'Man and Space'.

DescriptionIt was planned to launch the Giotto spacecraft in July 1985 and to encounter Halley on 13 March 1986, m 4 weeks after Halley's perihelion passage. At that time Halley is at 0.9 AU from the Sun. Essentially, the results derived in the articles of this volume also apply to the Giotto mission with the following changes: - The flyby ve1ocity is higher. It is increased from 57 km/s for the pre-perihelion encounter as discussed in this volume to 68 km/s for the post-perihelion encounter of the Giotto mission. - The dust and gas production rates are higher which leads to increased densities of cometary neutrals and dust particles in the comet coma. - The envelope for small dust particle trajectories is closer to the nucleus because of the increased solar radiation pressure. - The Giotto spacecraft has a larger shield area (probe: 1.23 m2, Giotto spacecraft: 2.66 m2). The impact of these changes on the results derived in this volume was discussed in a meeting which was her at ESTEC on 18 December 1980. A short report attached at the end of these proceedings summarises these discussions and gives several recommendations on spacecraft design to minimise the adverse effects of spacecraft charging, space charge and detector background anticipated for the Halley flyby.
